It's just a different way to look at it. I probably wouldn't listen to something and say "gee, I don't like a single song on this entire album, but it sure is cohesive! What an amazing piece of work!"
I would actually have to disagree on your specific examples - I think Vulgar, conceptually, is their most solid album by far. The album flows very well and everything has a similar mood (except for maybe "Sajou no uta") that just makes it all "click." Honestly the first time I heard Kisou I thought it was some kind of weird compilation or greatest hits or something. It's so all over the place that it doesn't feel like an album at all. I love Kisou, really, but it just seems like they didn't really nail down a mood for it. | | | | | Joined: 18 Mar 2009 Member: #35,060 Posts: 378 | UROBOROS and VULGAR are perfect albums form the aspect that they "flow"; you see the world view. As for MACABRE and Kisou, most of the songs those albums are my favourite Dir en grey songs ever, but as an album it's not cohesive.
MOAB crossed the line as of being too narrow minded, too much the same. It's just flat. | _________________ 'Karma from nihility in one's own mind' | | | | Joined: 01 Feb 2007 Member: #15,962 Posts: 122 | [quote="StriderSubzero @ November 17th 2009, 06:18"] Honestly the first time I heard Kisou I thought it was some kind of weird compilation or greatest hits or something. I 100% agree with you. Uroboros is absolutely consistant, maybe more than Vulgar, and might actually be the reason I enjoyed it less overall. It's an excellent piece of art and very solid, and I like most of the songs a lot. However, it's almost a little TOO consistent in its flow. I read it described as feeling like "One really, really song" and I felt the same way the first few times I listened to it. The songs work relatively well outside of the context of the album, but they work much better as a whole.
Marrow of a Bone, while I enjoyed that album more than Uroboros, does seem a bit flat. The lyrics on a lot of the songs seem very simple and straightforward, and there doesn't seem to be as much experimenting that they do so well. There are some fantastic, amazing songs on MoaB but it is pretty weak as an album, I think. I can understand why a lot of people were let down by it, although I really enjoyed it. | | | | | acky wiraqi if you seek amy

let's not be shy, the marrow of a bone was ridiculous.
uroboros is their most consistent body of work but i wouldn't go so far as to call it "one long song," there are records out there that fit that description much better. it just has a good, cohesive flow, whereas dir en grey LPs typically seem to be random compilations of songs that all abide to a particular theme but sound different. kisou was incredibly consistent in mood and atmosphere rather than sound, uroboros is consistent in both, but it doesn't recycle much. macabre appeals to me because of its distinct lack of flow, but its tracks are so wildly diverse that it actually creates a sort of tightness in the variance. | _________________ moms who wear jeans to match their teens' jeans | | | | | | | Joined: 18 Mar 2009 Member: #35,060 Posts: 378 | SHE!!! | _________________ 'Karma from nihility in one's own mind' | | | | | | | Joined: 18 Mar 2009 Member: #35,060 Posts: 378 | Hahah damn :3 | _________________ 'Karma from nihility in one's own mind' | | | | acky wiraqi if you seek amy

I really like that remix. Most of their remixes are infamously terrible, but I also really like the remix of Zan. | | | | | Joined: 13 Nov 2008 Member: #32,509 Posts: 59 | Aww, what about Rasetsukoku Downtown Funkmaster Mix? xD
